In Japan, there is a visa status called Highly Specialised Worker. This is a system that offers preferential treatment to talented people and encourages them to stay in Japan for as long as possible. Basically, Japan's residency system is strict and those who are not recognised as important or those with low income cannot stay in Japan for a long period of time. However, the policy is to give preferential status to people who are capable of leading-edge technology, such as in the IT field, researchers, PhDs and MBAs, and to encourage them to stay in Japan for a longer period of time.

  2. Your spouse can work.
Suppose you are married. Your spouse can work in education, research, entertainment or white-collar equivalent fields, but with preferential screening that is not based on academic or professional background. In Japan, there is a strong yearning for Western languages such as English and French, and you spose may be able to find work in a foreign language school and so on in the city without
    difficulty.
  3. 5-year status of residence can be obtained immediately.
With a general visa status in Japan, you have to renew it every year for several times to obtain a three-year period permit, and then renew it again several times to finally get a five-year period permit. However, if you are a highly specialised worker, you can immidiately get a five-year period of stay on your first application. Applying for a change of period of stay in Japan is hard work. It is a day's work and you never know when the immigration office will ask you questions after application, so you cannot leave Japan until you get a new permission (even if everything goes smoothly, it can take up to a month).
  4. You can call your parents.
Under the Japanese residency system, even if you obtain permanent resident status, you cannot call your parents (with some exceptions). However, if you are a highly specialised worker, you can bring in your or your spouse's parents (even adoptive parents) if you or your spouse is pregnant, or you need to look after an infant up to the age of seven.
  5. Priority for permanent residence
For most foreign nationals to obtain permanent residence in Japan, they are required to have lived in Japan for 10 years and to have been employed for five of those years.
